TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preamble

E10 has a number of options to save or back the .etz timetable file up, as well as an option to revert to the last saved version of the .etz file.
Options discussed in this document include:
  1. Save
  2. Save as
  3. Make a copy of an .etz file
  4. Back up
  5. Autobaks
  6. Revert to saved file

Save

You can save the .etz file on the school's network location, your hard disk drive, your desktop or a flash drive.

To save your file:

  • Press Ctrl + S
  • File > Save
  • Select SaveSave icon from the Quick Access Toolbar at the top left of the screen.

The .etz file will save with the current file name in the location from where it was opened.

Save as

It is common for a Timetabler to work with multiple .etz files, such as experimental versions of the timetable or different terms/semesters. If you are going to create a new file based on your existing file, but only want your changes saved in the new file, it's a good idea to use Save as to save your file with another name before any changes are made. This way your original .etz file will remain unchanged and all your edits will be in the new file.

To save your file as:

  1. Open the current .etz file, select File > Save as.
  2. Change the file name as required.
  3. Choose the location to save this file.
  4. Select Save.
The .etz file will save with the new file name in the same location than your original file, unless you selected another location.

Info  When double clicking on the Edval 10 .exe application, E10 automatically loads the most recently opened .etz file. Always check you have opened the desired .etz file. Multiple files can be opened at the same time.

Make a copy of an .etz file

A copy of an .etz timetable file can be made and renamed before making any changes.
  1. Locate and click on the .etz file on your computer or network to be copied.
  2. Right-click on the file name and select Copy.
  3. Right click and select Paste or hit Ctrl + V to paste it in the same location as the original file, or first navigate to a new location if it is to be saved in an alternate location.
  4. Right-click on the copy of the .etz and select Rename to change the file name as required, and hit Enter.

Backup

A backup of the .etz file can be created and stored as progress files or as a safety precaution in the unfortunate event of data loss in the master file.

Edval will prefix the existing file name with Backup, the day and date, and place a copy of the file in a folder called Backups in the same location where the original file is saved.

To back up the .etz file:

  1. Open the current .etz file, select File > Backup.
  1. Edval will create a folder called Backups in the same location where the original .etz file is saved.
  2. The back up .etz file name will be prefixed with the text Backup, and include the day and date.
  3. Select Save.
The .etz file will be saved in the Backups folder with the new Backup file name, including the day and date.

Autobaks

As changes occur in the .etz timetable file, and around every 5 minutes or so, a copy of the .etz file will be automatically saved.

This function is very useful in cases such as:
- the file was saved with unwanted changes and you wish to recover an earlier version of your file without those changes
- the main file has become corrupt for some unfortunate reason and you need to locate a recent uncorrupted version of the file.
E10 will save 20 versions of your file in no particular number order, and then will overwrite them.

A pop up will display for a few seconds each time this auto-save occurs.

These files are saved in a folder called Autobaks, which was created in the same location as the .etz file.

To recover a file from the Autobaks folder:

  1. Locate the Autobaks folder in the same location where the original .etz file is saved.
  2. Double click on the Autobaks folder to open.
  3. Ensure the View > Details option is selected, then double click on the Date modified heading to sort by date and time the files were saved.
  1. Double click on the required file name to open the Autobak file. You may need to open several files until a file is found that contains the data you are looking for.
  2. Select File > Save as to save the Autobak file with an alternate name and select the location where the original .etz file is saved.
Note: You do not want to save the renamed file in the Autobaks folder, since this will cause you to end up with an Autobaks folder within another Autobaks folder.
  3. Select Save.
The renamed .etz file will be saved in the location you selected with the original .etz file.

If E10 crashes or your computer before you saved your .etz file, the file will be restored the next time you open the .etz file, but will display a warning that an auto-saved version of the file is open.

To keep this version of the file as the correct file, select OK on the warning message and continue to work in the .etz file and save as usual.

To discard this file and use the previously saved version of the file, select OK to the warning message, select File > Revert to saved file to restore the last actively saved file.

Note: The autobak save does not act in the same was as pressing the Save button.
  1. The autobak save does not act in the same was as pressing the Save button.
  2. Despite the auto-saving feature, you are strongly encouraged to back your timetable file up regularly, and it is best to do so on another computer or location, should your computer be stolen or have a hard disk failure.
  3. Tip: You can also email yourself the latest .etz file on a regular basis.

Revert to saved file

If at any stage while working in your .etz file, you wish to undo all the changes that have been made, E10 has the option to revert to saved file, which restores the file to the way it was the last time it was saved.

To revert to the saved file:

  • In the .etz file, where you made unwanted changes, select File > Revert to saved file.

  1. Select Revert in the 'Revert timetable' pop up that appears on the screen.
The .etz file will revert to the last saved version of the file with the current file name.
