This article explains how the Translation Table can be used to break courses into sub components when generating Lines in Edval.
Once Tertiary features have been enabled, the Translation Table will appear under the 'Class Constraints' table in the Lines > Elective data screen. It consists of 5 columns in total:
Input - is where you enter the course code of the master course you wish to translate.
Output - is where you enter the course codes of up to 3 sub components the master course will be translated into.
Warn - will warn you if the defined Unit count of the sub components doesn't add up to the defined Unit count of the Master course you are translating.
In the courses table, select the master course you are going to translate into smaller components. For example, this Biology course:
In this example, we will create 2 sub components for each class of the Biology course; a BIOT for a theory component and a BIOL for a lab component. After translation, the master course will not exist, so you need to make sure that the #C, MaxS, Teachers, Rooms and Lines values are set for the sub components accordingly.
Each class has the same number of components, so ensure the #C value is the same as the master course for both sub components. Similarly, the MaxS size will also be the same for both sub components. In this example, we are setting different room requirements for the lab lessons.
The Unit count is important, the 'Units' value against the sub components MUST total the 'Units' value entered for the master course. In this case, both of our sub-components will be 1U each, which means they will run for half a line (4 periods each), based on the Units per Line and Periods per line settings in the Parameters table:
Once the sub-components have been set up accordingly in the Courses table, now create an entry in the Translation table as follows:
If the Translation Table shows an entry in the 'Warn' column;
It means the 'Units' value for the sub-components doesn't add up to the 'Units' value for the master course and this should be corrected before generating Lines;
Generate lines as usual. In the View Lines screen, you will see the 2 Biology classes are not shown, but the two Biology sub-component classes are instead.
In this example, these 1U courses have been places on the same line as if they were horizontally linked, however the two components do not have to be on the same line which means you can also use the Translation Table to split a class across multiple lines.
To ensure the class lists of both Biology class subcomponents are identical, use a bidirectional includes statement:
For more information on the Includes statements and other use case scenarios for both the Translation Table and the Includes statement, please see the article: How to use the 'Includes' statement when generating lines.
