E10: Ways to block classes

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preamble

There are many different ways schools block classes together when generating lines. This document explores many of the ways classes can be blocked on lines.

All classes of the same subject on the same line

Example: Maths must have all classes on the same line. Science, HASS and English must also be placed on their own lines.

There are two ways to achieve this.
Using the Block column will make these lines exclusive, whilst using the VLink column will allow other courses to also populate onto these lines, if the student selections and the number of classes will allow.

  1. First, for exclusive lines, enter unique letters into the Block column (visible through the View options).

  1. Second, for lines which may or may not be exclusive, enter the CourseCode into the VLink field:

Two lines containing two subjects (half blocks)

Example: Two lines must contain Maths and English classes only, and two lines must contain HASS and Science classes only.

  1. In the Courses screen, View options, select Course block
  2. In the Block column, enter letters to represent block types.
eg EM means spread these classes across two blocks (E and M). No other subject can be placed on these two blocks.
eg HS means spread these classes across two blocks (H and S). No other subject can be placed on these two blocks.
*Any letters can be used, the letters chosen here simply represent English, Maths, HASS and Science.

If there are an uneven number of classes, for example five English classes and five Maths classes:

  1. In the Block column, enter the two letters to represent the two blocks for one subject, then enter the same two letters for the second subject, but in the other order.

Some, but not all, classes of the same subject on the same line

Example: The Maths Specialist classes must be placed on the same line as a Maths General class.

  1. Go to Rule and Constraints in the slide out action bar and then the Constraints tab.
  2. Enter the CourseCode, colon, class number (eg 11MAS:1 means course 11MAS and class number 1) into the A column.
  3. Enter the CourseCode, colon, class number (eg 11MAG:1 means course 11MAG and class number 1)  into the B column.
  4. Choose Vertical from the Relationship options to place these two classes on the same line.
  5. Repeat for the second and further instances of the classes.

Classes on the same line and in each rotation

Example: Semester based classes placed on the same line, with a class in each rotation (often done for even staffing purposes). This is known as horizontally linking (HLink).

  1. Enter the CourseCode of one subject into either:
    - the same course (to have the subject horizontally linked to itself for all instances), eg 9DAI, 9FAI1, 9MBIO.
    - another course that the course will be horizontally linked to, eg 9ACT / 9IND1.

Tips

  1. To see the faculty colours of subjects in the Line results screen, go to the View options and select Use subject colours.
