Preamble
Edval Choice offers a number of options when choosing the Type of dataset. Most often the 'Electives' type dataset will be used. Sport and Votes are the next most often used types.
General datasets mat be used to collect data that does not fall into the other Form types (Electives, Sport or Votes). No line generation or class creation is done, it is simply a data gathering tool.
An scenario is provided here to show one example of how the General form might be used, but there are many scenarios that the General type form may be useful.
Scenario
The school wishes to ask the incoming Year 7 students some questions that require yes or no responses prior to their first day of school next year. The school decides to use Edval Choice to ask the students these questions and capture their responses.
Set up a General dataset
- Go to Lines > Datasets
- Enter details:
- Dataset: Enter a unique dataset code.
- Description: Enter a meaningful description, as this is what students will see when they log in online.
- Type: Click in this field and select General from the slide out panel on the right.
- Year levels: Add the Year Levels of students who you will be gathering information from.
Enter the response options
Lines > Elective data > Courses
Enter each option that the student may select. In this scenario, the options will be sentence responses.
Enter a Code into the 'Option' field, and the sentence into the Name field.

In this example, letter categories have been entered into the Rules fields so that the online form can restrict the options that appear for each question on the Choice form.
Configure the form
Lines > Edval Choice > Configure forms
In this scenario, the questions being presented to the students are entered into the Label fields.
The letter categories previously entered in the Elective data > Courses screen are entered into the Groups fields to limit the correct responses to display for each question.
The student web form shows the questions and response options:
Note that the default headings that appear on the online student form (Main Units, Subject and Units) cannot be changed at this time.
