E10 - Priority classes

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preamble

Occasionally students are placed into two classes that clash on their timetable, and they generally go to the more 'important class' any time there is a clash.
We can allow both classes to show on their timetable, or, E10 allows us to specify which subjects should take priority on their timetable.

Example
A student attends a Support English class in place of some of their regular classes (or an extension, co-curricular lesson etc). We can allow both classes to show on their timetable, or we can make the Support English class (only) show.
a) Display both classes: enrolling the student in both classes with no further action will display both classes.

b) Display the Support English class as the priority: Making the Support English class the priority hides other classes from view.

Setting priority classes

  1. Go to Settings > Classes
  2. Enter a specific class code, or use an asterisk as a wildcard to pick up a set of classes. The asterisk replaces one or more characters in a string. eg SENG* will pick up the classes SENG1, SENG2 and SENG3 (the asterisk replaces the Class identifier in this example).

Other common priority class examples:
  1. *HI* = all classes with the text 'HI' somewhere in the middle of the code (not start or end) e.g. 7HISA, 8HISB, 9HIS1, 10HIS2, 11AHI1, 11MHI1, 12AHI1, 12MHI1, etc
  2. 11AHI* = all classes whose code starts '11AHI' e.g. 11AHI1, 11AHI2, etc
  3. *HISB - all classes whose code ends 'HISB' e.g. 7HISB, 8HISB, 9HISB, 10HISB, etc

Priority levels

Three levels of priority can be used for a range of classes or subjects, where Priority 1 is the highest, then Priority 2, then Priority 3. This is useful where a student may have periods where they have three alternate classes on the same period.

In the example below:
  1. a student attends TVET classes on Tuesday afternoons, so they will miss a lesson each of ART and MAT
  2. ART and MAT classes run on TueA
  3. before setting a priority, the clashes occur on Tuesday afternoon
  4. after setting the priority, only the TVET class shows for TueA5 and TueA6.

Alert

Not all external systems understand E10's priority class feature. If you sync the timetable to an external system, log in and check the student's timetable to see whether the priority class only shows or if both classes show, and consider how this will affect roll marking.

Low priority

When a student is enrolled in a VET and an Elective class that occurs during the same periods, their timetable will display both classes. If the Elective course is entered into the Low priority field, only the VET class will be displayed in the student's timetable.
