TABLE OF CONTENTS
Preamble
Schools new to using Edval software receive a migrated file showing their current year's timetable. This timetable has not usually been built in Edval, but 'transplanted' into an .etz file. At some stage, the school will need to 'rollover' this file in preparation for building the following year's timetable.
One of the steps in building a timetable for secondary schools is to create/generate elective lines. This is done in the 'Lines' menu of Edval, and involves:
- creating a list of subjects that students will choose from
- collecting students preferences from the available subjects, in preference order
- updating subject teacher and subject room sets
- generating lines
The Lines > Elective data > Courses screen may not initially contain the list of subjects that will be offered to students. Edval has a feature that can populate this screen, based on existing subjects listed in Classes > Class data screens.
Steps to populate Elective data with courses
Step 1: Create a 'dataset'

Refer to: E10 - Lines > Datasets for full details of how to create a dataset.
Step 2: Add Subjects into Lines > Elective data > Courses
Enter the course data. There are several options available to do this:
- ManuallyEnter the details for each subject into Lines > Elective data > Courses.

Refer to: E10 - Elective data > Courses
- Import via a spreadsheet
A spreadsheet containing the course codes and course names can be imported via File > Import data > Elective course data.

Refer to: E10 - Import Elective course data
- Import from Class data
If course data already exists in the Class data (F6) screens, it can be easily brought across into the Elective data screen.
- Reprocess lines
This option is an advanced option for the purpose of exploring alternate lines solution based on current class enrolments.
Once data exists in the Courses screen, proceed with subject selection and line generation processes.
