E10 - Choice FAQ: Add a question to the webform

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Preamble

Occasionally schools wish to add questions to the webform, in addition to collecting the student course preferences, to capture student information.
The only way to do this is to ask the question on the Choice form, and include the answers as 'courses' in Edval.
Alert
It is important to note that E10 does not distinguish between legitimate courses and answers to questions. They are all seen as courses. Therefore, care is needed when adding questions to the webform and answers as 'courses'.

Scenario: A school wishes to ask the students 'Do you want an ATAR?' and capture student responses at the same time as collecting subject preferences.

1. Add the answer options as 'Courses' in  Lines > Elective data > Courses
For example: 'Yes, I  do want an ATAR' and 'No, I do not want an ATAR'
  -  Include a letter to group the two responses, eg A (for ATAR) so that we can show only these two options on the webform next to the question
  -  Enter None in both TeacherPref and RoomPref
  -  MaxS can be as high as the number of students in the year level

2. Add the question to the webform via Lines > Edval Choice > Configure forms
The user can decide if it will be the first question as part of the Reserve units, or as Main units.
Reserve
  1. Add an extra field to the Reserve units section.
  2. Enter A into the Groups field to only allow the two answers to display
  3. Enter not A into the other options so that the two answers do not display
Alert

Before lines are generated, in Lines > Elective data > Courses > #C field, enter 0 (zero) so that students are not placed into one of these 'classes' if E10 needs to resort to the student reserve preferences to give them a full program.

Main: If the school wants to add the question at the start of the webform, there are a few options to consider.
  1. An extra line may need to be added in Lines > Courses > Action bar: Parameters to allow these 'courses' to sit when lines are generated. For example, a school that normally creates a set of 6 lines may enter #Elective Lines = 7. The A group 'courses' can have (line) 7 entered into the Line field, forcing them on Line 7. All other courses would need to have 'not 7' entered to stop them from running on Line 7 (although it is unlikely that Edval would place any classes on Line 7 if all students have selected one of the A group answers (courses).
** It is important when using this option to have 'classes' running to hold these students so that E10 gives students a full program.
  2. Alternatively, enter 'offline' into the Line field to have these 'classes' run offline.
  3. Add an extra field to the Main units section.
  4. Enter A into the Groups field to only allow the two answers to display
  5. Enter not A into the other options so that the two answers do not display

3. Download data once students have submitted
Lines > Elective data > Students > Action bar: Download student choices from Edval Choice

Once the data is in the file, exports and lists can be easily obtained.
