Preamble
Schools may offer more than one program or pathway to students, so it can be helpful to allow students to select a Choice form that offers only the available courses for each pathway. This creates less confusion for students and displays only true subject options open to the pathway program.
The following video from a recent webinar gives an overview into pathways.
Pathways examples:
- ATAR or Non ATAR
- HSC or IB
- VCE or VM (Victoria)
- Mainstream, Arts Academy, or Sports Academy
Example: Year 7 Program has three pathways on offer: Main, Arts Academy and Sports Academy set up in the .etz file.
These Pathway options display for students in Choice online:
Options when setting up pathways include:
- Students may select from all available pathways or only from predetermined pathways
- Subjects may appear in all pathways, or just in particular pathways
- Each pathway's form can be individually configured, including the number of main preference drop downs and reserve requirements.

You may be prompted to enter your WebCode at some stage during the set up. Note that the WebCode required is for the calendar year that is stored in the .etz timetable file (File > Options > Academic year).
1. Set up a dataset containing course information
Set up a dataset containing the courses on offer to students. Refer to the Knowledge Base on E10 - Datasets: Set up and Types if necessary.
2. Define pathways
- Navigate to Lines > Edval Choice > Define pathways
- Locate the dataset. Note that the year level will display by default in the Pathways field. Click on this filed to rename the default year level to a pathway title
- Select 'Add pathway'
- Rename the default text to an appropriate pathway title
- Repeat for as many pathways as required

If working in a multi year dataset, add the pathway for each year level the pathway is offered to.
3. Enter pathway rules if required
Rules can be assigned to specific pathways by selecting the required pathway from the drop down list in the Pathway column.
- Navigate to Lines > Elective data > Rules and Constraints > Rules. Select the dataset and year level from the dropdown.
- Check rules that apply to all pathways in the selected year level have 'All' selected in the Pathway column.
- Enter any rules that apply only to a specific pathway and select the corresponding pathway name in the Pathway column.
4. Optional: Assign students to a pathway
This step is only relevant to schools who have predetermined particular pathways for (some or all) students, and want only the predetermined pathway to display to students upon log in.
- Navigate to Lines > Elective data > Students
- In the Pathway column, enter the pathway title. When students log in they will be taken directly to their assigned pathway.Note that not all students must have a predetermined pathway; enter only for the relevant students. If the Pathway field is left blank, all pathways will display to student when they log in and they may choose their pathway of choice.
5. Configure pathway forms
- Navigate to Lines > Edval Choice > Configure forms
- Select the appropriate dataset from the drop down
- Select each pathway and configure each form. Each form is required to be configured, as different selection criteria may exist for the different pathways.
Refer to E10 - Choice: Configure Forms.

If working in a multi year dataset, the pathway for each year level must be configured, as different selection criteria may exist for the different pathways.

If one pathway is the same as another, configure the first, then select the Action bar: Copy parameters/rules/text from another year-level/pathway.
6. Sync forms
- Navigate to Lines > Edval Choice > Sync
- Select the appropriate dataset from the drop down
- Enter sync details, then select Sync. All pathway forms for the year level will sync at the same time.
The Status column will display the status of the forms:

Inconsistent state/sync required is displayed when there's a discrepancy between the etz file and the online form. Re-syncing each year level in the dataset normally resolves this.
This will also happen if the Dataset Form name has a hyphen (-). Make sure to delete any trailing spaces before and after the hyphen, then re-sync all year levels in the dataset.

If working in a multi year dataset, each year level must be sync'd separately.
Refer to E10 - Choice: Sync form.
7. Collect student choices
Students log in with their WebCodes and enter their preferences.
8. Download student choices
- Navigate to Lines > Elective data > Students Action bar: Download student choices from Edval Choice
Student preference data will be downloaded into the file.
Note that if working in a multi year dataset, choices will be downloaded for the entire dataset; there is no need to download per year level.

Students may submit preferences in more than one pathway (if more than one pathway is on offer to them). Where this occurs, E10 will download the most recent submission only into the .etz file; it will not download both pathway preferences.
